About Black Women Work
Black Women Work is a burgeoning digital community celebrating the journeys of Black women in the workplace. This platform seeks to spotlight the multitude of stories that have paved our professional paths, honestly and unvarnished.
About the Creator
I’m Pier Moses Duncan, a people, culture, and change strategist and freelance writer currently working in the nonprofit sector. I reside in Brooklyn, NY. I am passionate about the amplification and celebration of Black women as the world’s greatest creators, thinkers, and leaders. I created Black Women Work to ensure that the professional accomplishments of Black women are captured and spotlighted.
My belief is that often, regardless of professional sector or role, Black women break the mold simply by existing in those spaces. I believe that we each have a rich, one-of-kind story, and through providing a dedicated platform, I seek to honor and share those stories with the world.
Our narratives are important. They have the power to inform, influence, and shape the way we work and the future experiences of those who enter these work spaces after us. By using an interview format, I hope to bring those narratives forward in the authentic voice of the interviewee, and create a safe space of intimate sisterhood.
I’m excited to share these incredible narratives with you. Thanks for being here.
F.A.Q.s
Who is Black Women Work for?
Black Women Work is for Black women, by Black women, featuring Black women. We are crushing it. We influence every sector we are in, bringing our unique perspective, talent, and ideas to bear in ways that transform and enhance the status quo beyond recognition. We do this in ways big and small, high-profile and low-key, with acknowledgment and in anonymity. Regardless, we shine bright, and Black Women Work seeks to capture us from all angles, in our best light.
Why are you featuring stories of Black women in the workplace?
Representation matters. While there are high-profile Black women doing incredible things, Black Women Work operates with the belief that a bigger platform is not the only indicator of impact. Black women are doing extraordinary things in workplaces and professions considered "ordinary." There is nothing ordinary about us, and the world needs to hear our voices.
What kind of stories are you looking to feature?
It's all in the name! If you are Black, if you are female-identifying, and if you work in a professional space, Black Women Work is all about you! Your narrative is a rich one, and full of all the things that make a story worthwhile to tell -- lessons, laughs, heartbreaks, triumphs. The power of Black Women Work is in the diversity of our community. Every story is different, but all are worth telling.
How does this work?
Short interviews are conducted with the interviewees, with an excerpt featured on the Instagram page, @BlackWomenWorkIG, and the full version published here on this website (under the Stories tab), and in a weekly e-newsletter. In creating a space for both short- and long-form content, Black Women Work seeks to undercut the tendency of social media to focus solely on our shiny successes and dive deeper to share the full narratives of our professional journeys.
I’m a professional Black woman. Can I be featured?
Absolutely! Black Women Work is a community, and community means inclusion. Let's ensure we have as many of us as possible represented in this space! Please complete the form on our Contact Us page to let us know you’re interested! You can also recommend a friend!
